These six interrelated pieces tell the story of Maggie, a vibrant individual who is also Everywoman daughter, dreamer, nurse, friend, wife, mother. Spanning over eighty-five years, they follow her from her youth in Depression-era Illinois to the time when she ventures forth to 1940’s Hollywood and coastal California, and her return to the rural Midwest. Bittersweet and poignant, celebratory and inspiring, these stories portray the exuberance of youth, the delight of friendship, the adventure of going forth into the world, and the disappointment and heartache that are a part of life.

My Review of “The Dreams of Youth” by Linda MahkovecI loved this collection of thoughts in “Dreams of Youth” by Linda Mahkovec. In all of her books, Linda writes about love, beauty and meaning. In this very short heartwarming book , the main character is Maggie, almost a “Superwoman” in the roles she plays to everyone around her. Maggie is the wife, mother, friend, Nurse, confidant, and often questions her dreams or goals, as life changes. One of the things I love about Linda’s writing, is her descriptions of everything and anything, which are so appealing to the senses. Maggie grew up in an orphanage, and yet remains positive. We see Maggie’s perspective change in regard to the characters in her life. Through the short excerpts, we see an idealist in young Maggie. As Maggie ages, there is beauty and the adventure and challenges of life.
I would recommend this story for those who enjoy an emotional heartwarming story.

Dreams of Youth edition by Linda Mahkovec Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
In her collection of short stories The Dreams Of Youth, Irene interweaves a delightful selection of narratives that concern the life of her protagonist Maggie.
While other reviews have rightfully focused on the strength of the protagonist's character, I would like to emphasise the quality of the writing. Irene writes with a lyrical tenderness that enshrines each story with compassion and depth.
In my favourite of the stories, 'The B-Movie Actress', Irene charts the trajectories of two very different women. What is remarkable about this story is that it has the emotional resonance one might expect to find in an entire novel about two such characters.
That is the magic of the short story and it is clear that Irene is a skilled exponent of the form. I eagerly anticipate reading more of her work.
A short biographical collection of stories depicting the important events in a woman’s life and how each builds to the next, an emotional quick read bringing laughter and tears, this book shows American culture from the late 40s to the early 2000s.
"AND THE THOUGHTS OF YOUTH, ARE LONG, LONG THOUGHTS"
Longfellow
I don't think that i have yet read a book as short as this, (38 pgs.) that is filled with such feeling-inspired words. Five short stories, stories of the past up to the present, that we can all relate to no matter what your age is.
Agnes Irene takes us on a journey of memories in these 5 short chapters, starting with her dreams of escaping her mid-west background for the glory of life in sunny California with her close friend Rita. Two very attractive, very different young women with dreams in their eyes and souls. This is the story of both of them, their stories intertwine throughout the pages. This is the story of how life can sometimes get in the way of living. How the best laid plans can change with a seemingly simple choice, or choices.
How in looking back with the wisdom, with the wishes, the what-ifs, and the wonder-whys of age can color in the pages of life.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Dreams of Youth. I've always been drawn to this time period, and it was wonderful to see a strong character in Maggie.
What I most enjoyed about this book was the poet's voice of the author, Agnes Irene. Reading her writing I saw the descriptions, but I also felt them in a way that went far beyond what most writer's prose accomplishes. I'd be happy to read more about these characters in a future book.
One can only imagine life back when the average woman was expected to be only a wife and mother. The Depression made life seem intolerable, and dreaming about another life took away some of the sadness and hopelessness. Maggie was able to escape that sadness and live out a fairytale, pursuing her dreams. And she always had those dreams to remember throughout her life. This was a heartfelt story. The author was able to truly express the sadness and joy of each character. Lovely.
Beautifully written, fast-paced. This story is a delightful surprise weaving timeless virtue into a romantic time period. In the pursuit of youthful dreams, Maggie and her friend, Rita, explore California in the Golden Age of Hollywood. The memories of their youthful adventures bring them comfort as the disillusionment of adult reality, marriage, and illness seep into their lives. Later in life, Maggie strikes out alone and catches a glimpse of a love that might have been. She reflects on life and love as the circle of life is completed and returns to the love and acceptance she felt as someone's child. Maggie's dreams, triumphs, hardships, and reflections on love could easily be your own.
